 My $.02 - 

  I got certified through PADI a few years back(6-7?)
- course itself was $125-ish if memory serves - BUT,
the mask, fins, snorkel, and weight belt made up the
difference (to around $400-ish I think).  I think
you'll find the instruction costs minimal as compared
to the equipment costs (even begining stuff you *need*
- like above)...
