Pat,

The leads to the motor are not nearly as important as the lead lengths from 
the battery. The leads to the motor just add to the motor inductance. The 
leads to the battery add the parasitic inductances I referred to earlier. 
Best placement of the motor controller is as close to the battery as possible 
consistent with avoiding corrosion problems. As far as what it would take to 
do your motor controller it might be best to talk off this site. If you think 
I want funds to do the design, I don't, I would be willing to provide the 
time on the basis of personal interest in the technical aspects. I would need 
to start with what you want the controller to do. A simple current limit or a 
speed control. How about reversing. Do you want the actual controls at your 
control panel while the power switching was placed elsewhere. I consider the 
actual design fairly simple. You would not need any mechanical linkages since 
it can all be done electronically.

I would need some idea about your time schedule.
