[PSUBS-MAILIST] gps and uw/ nav.
hello.
I have tried off the shelf equipment, for
uw navigation, the units does not get a signal below the surface, not at least
the ones i have use.
But the problem gets a little more
complicated, because even if they do get a fix this data does not really
accurate can be translated to the chart, since the charts available were not
done using gps.
soundings on the other way, combinated
whith a series of waypoints on a well established route, allowding for a
corridor whit lateral check points will do for a practical aproach, since you
can determine before hand at what latitude/longitude a particular bottom feature
appears, you will be able to safely navigate, whithout a constant link to a gps,
a sonar whith fordward detection
capabilitie seems to have prioritie since is this type of instrument plus
your heading that you rely for the mayor part of the time, and when lost ,you
can always surface and the gps will then get you back on
track.
hey, hitech,is very goodas an aid, but to
really work needs to be complement by your skills, my point is that even if
we could get a gps signal underwater will it not be enough to navigate whith a
good margin of safety, it is just another tool
