RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] engineering

Title: Message
Years ago I got an estimate for testing a PSUB in a navy pressure chamber -- must be in the PSUBS archive. They said the cost was dependant on the amount of instrumentation I wanted, which would influence the setup time. But a "typical" value as I recall was around $25K. Way beyond my budget I'm afraid. It's nice that you get advance warning of when you're about to implode the hull, so you can stop the test in time. I understand they lead a fine tube out of the hull and graph the volume of escaping air against the external pressure. When the compression of the hull ceases to be linear, you've reached the elastic limit of the hull steel somewhere and it's about to go bang.

they only do sub sea work and have a facility to hydro the hull to abs guidelines. I don't have a cost for that right now, but the idea of testing it before shoving it full of expensive systems is appealing.

And is the engineering firm doing the CAD drawings?  Have they done other small subs?
