By all means Patrick, take a look at my initial conceptual sketch on the frappr site. Quite simple really.

I am not a diver, no.
I have some friends that are but I have never really gotten around to getting into it myself.
I know I REALLY should before I get too terribly involved in in this.

I come from a fine arts and mechanical drafting/graphic design background (no engineering however but I am proficient with Pro-e)
I grew up on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Talbot County MD.
My uncle has worked as a "Wuddermin" his whole life and I am no stranger to making a living on the bay either.

I like vehicles. Making one from scratch, especially a sub, really excites me.
I have no grand ideas of nailing 2 canoes toghther and descending the depths of the open seas, rest assured.
I just want to make a boat that sinks and unsinks essentially. After that I'll move on to soemthing more advanced.
My interest in a wooden ambient is mainly due to the cost and ease of working of the material. I would likley store
the resultant project back in MD. The waters are usually a bit murky but the depths in most places are less than 50' and the seas are usually calm. I would also have a place to store it there.

You may all think I'm crazy here, but I'd also like to make it a 2+ person and diesel/electric (or upgradeable to d/e at least)

First off - it's easier to respond if we know whether you're a diver or not . . . easier to find a starting point.

you're kidding me...I can make that with a trip to Home Despot!
maybe I won't have to wait till I'm older and wealthier to build a sub afterall!
are there any plans or design guidelines on the psub site or elsewhere for
this type of vessel?

What should it be framed with?
What would the safe operating depth be?

Welcome Jim!!

Regarding $ to build your own boat . . . you may want to consider building a simple, dry-ambient sub.  Compared to a one-atm sub, it's not expensive at all.

We're talking epoxy/FRP over a 1/4 inch ply skin, a trolling motor, maybe two batts with a selector switch, some rebar as ballast, glassed over 2X4 keel, some plexi windows, simple mechanical controls, simple scuba gauges, some LP line, used dive tanks, maybe some inexpensive bilge pumps and a few through-hull fittings.  I bet you could squeeze in under the price of an ocean kayak.

If you keep your sub lean and mean, it'll use up less batt power, go further and last longer - all of that translates into a cheap-to-run sub.  If the idea is to get water over your window this may be a viable project for you after all.

BTW, since you have decided to join us, you may consider getting your map pin onto our Frappr site.  Twenty members of our list have joined so far.  It's a way we can identify immediately who's doing what around the world.

Warm regards,

Hello all, I'm new to the group. I spent 6 years in the US naval submarine service. 4 years 10 months on board the USS Baton Rouge (SSN 689). Now middle age has me by the b#$%s, and I want to build a boat of my own. I figure I won't have the time/money/space for at least 5 years. I count that as a benefit, as I should have a pretty good plan by then. in the mean time, I'll learn and share what little I know.
Jim
