Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] 1ATM construction Q?

Bill is correct Patrick, keep that shape ambient. Flat plate design concentrates stressors. There is a section on the PSUB site regarding this issue.

Hi Patrick.

I am not an engineer, but the flat sections of an octagonal hull would not
have as much strength as a round sphere, egg shape, or cylinder.
That is why most 1 atm subs use those shapes.

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] 1ATM construction Q?

It seems that steel and acrylic cylindrical/spherical construction is the
predominant method of making 1ATM subs.
Can or has it been done in other ways?

for instance, could I theoretically build my octagonal hull out of steel or
another material and use it as a 1ATM vessel? has anyone build 1ATM vessels
out of something other that steel? (regardless of dive depth)
