Now why would that be? Afraid of a steel pressure vessel suddenly giving way blowing you to bits and scalding the pieces in the process?

Well guess what.......me too!!      Minus the scalding part, that's an implosion in reverse and why chicken little here is going ambient. I would take a ride with Hugo in JSL but, not something I welded together. That would take both confidence and some serious nerve, I admire those who can.

I'll second the others' comments - nice, handsome looking boat!  I've always thought the Protector had a stout, capable look and I think Patrick's sketch has the same feel.

(To really nail that Victorian look, how about a steam engine and boiler?!   :-))

the Nautilis in its varied incarnations has much influence on my aesthetic preference regarding submarines

Got your link and checked out the drawing Patrick. Your conning tower reminds me of  Simon Lake's first military design sub  "The Protector" that was sold to Russia back in 1902.
Compare them. Pic of he Protector is at this link  http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/cno/n87/usw/issue_16/simonlake.html

Hi, Patrick - do you have a "shareable" sketch yet?

the sketch has no scale at the moment but it appears that it will yield a long and roomy cabin with ample room for me to maneuver and for necessary operational and life support equipment.
