Stephen,
This is critical to my design as well. Iv'e discovered the following.
1, A simple float mechanically linked to a flapper valve is your simplest and best bet.
2, Intake tip down turned in U-shape, not pretty, but practical.
3, Emergency ball valve shut off.
4, Water trap in system similar to sailboat Dorade vent, drains to bilge and then delt with.
5, Exhaust end (in cabin) should not be linked to engine intake manifold.
6, Centrifugal fan forced ventilation in system, adequate diameter for airflow...etc.Quite simple actually, materials are basic, pipe, hose, valves, fan.

Hi Everyone,
Can anyone give me advice on the most successful way to set up a snorkel system?
What are the best ways of engineering a water free intake and exhaust for the diesel in the event you are getting waves washing over the top?
What are the best ways of purging the system after arriving back on top?
How do you seal the system before a dive?
