[PSUBS-MAILIST] downward facing viewport

Sometimes it's the simplest things that come to mind,
but the other day it occurred to me that very few subs
have been designed with downward facing viewports.
Slightly ironic, given that the crafts themselves are
designed to go down and "see" the bottom.

Obviously there are a few exceptions, but most of
these subs only have slightly angled viewports (as the
Alvin does, for example), or a couple of subs that
utilize fully enclosed plexiglass globes. Very few
"glass bottom" subs.

Is there any historical reason for the lack of
viewports in the deck? Or is it just to hard to
remember not to step on the plex and muck it up? ;-)

Just an observation,
Rob
