I considered CO2 for compensation having used it for paintball. I know it has a great expansion ratio from liquid to air; but I saw that it turnes to a liquid at just over 5 atm. So if that is the case, am I correct that opening a cylinder below 140 feet or so would do nothing?
I plan to compensate with air that is bled off from the crew cabin, but I'm going to run it thru a check valve before if flows to motors, batteries and other components. That might be enough for you too Dean.

Rick I will for sure have dedicated air for this function. I am also a volunteer
fire man, so I have access to a large quanity of SCBA fire air tanks. These
may only be used for so long because of the high heats they may be expossed
to. Most I am collecting have not even been used, but are out of date (cool Hugh)
My plan so far is to run an individual system of pipes to 4 thrusters in the rear
and a vertical in the bow and stearn. The pipes will have the wires in them and
am even contemplating using CO2 instead of air for fire supression. Probably an
over kill but like I said I am a fire man and the idea of a fire at 300 ft scares
the bagibies out me. If nothing else safety is going to be number one with my
creation.
Does anyone in this group know of any subs on Lake Superior. I live here
and have not heard of any. The lake is quite unique as it does not allow
any deteriation of things. I will be exploring 1800 schooners and such that
will look like they went down yesterday.
