Have you considered magnetic-couplers as an alternative to thru-hull
spinning shafts ?
Off the shelf couplers are available, and with the help of a good
machinist, a leek proof sub with internal motors of almost unlimited power
should be buildable. The long term maintenance costs could offset the initial
cost of a hull modification to accept the drives, and the external structure to
support the propeller end.
