I'm hoping for some design input. I am doing final design on the sleeve
assemblies that the forward thrusters will pivot on. I plan on a final ID of
1.5 inches and an OD of about 2.5 inches. This will allow adequate space to
machine a seal chamber as well as provide more than adequate strength.
Because the welding will shrink and distort the tube I plan on doing final
machining after welding. I plan on welding the sleeve into a 3/4 inch thick
and 5 inch diameter flat disc prior to machining. after this I plan on
cutting a five inch hole in the hull and welding the disc in place. I feel
that this method will put the final weld distortion far enough away so as to
not cause distortion of the sleeve. My hull is 48 inches in diameter and 1/2
inch thick.
Does this sound reasonable to those of you who have been there before or do
you have better ideas.
