RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Re: The Dry Divers

Re: 'Submaray' . .

Submaray was a precursor to the 'Nekton' series. It was designed in
the 50's and built by Doug Privett (later builder of the Nekton series)for
Mart Toggweiller who owned a well-known dive charter boat called 'Maray' -
hence the subs name. Mart operated Maray out of central L.A. with trips to
Catalina, and the other nearby islands. Mart was also a well-published
underwater photographer and the author of 'how to build underwater camera
cases' (or similar title) - a popular soft-cover how-to booklet on plexi
housing construction that saw many printings. He also built custom housings
and sold shaft seal glands, gears, handles, etc.,
I remember Mart telling me how 'Submaray' was hired to recover the
body of a Scuba diver off Catalina - he had no manipulator (this was pre
Privett 'Billiard ball') so he hit on the idea of attaching a pole with a
500lb 'super' magnet on it. He clanked the magnet onto the the victims twin
tanks . . . blew ballast - and couldn't lift him! Now what? Now the
punchline is a shaggy dog, 'cause I don't remember how he got out of that
embarrasing situation.- I mentioned the story to Dick Anderson, years ago
and he said he thought that a commercial diver had attached a line to the
sub - but that didn't ring a bell. Any ideas?
