RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST]

  Frank,

The most obvious problem I encountered was that aboard a large submarine, many people were available to perform many tasks...I will have a crew of but one.
This arrangment was decided upon because the stern planes and bow planes had to be independent one from another but operate in like manners. The rudder was really easy as it was physically different from the other depth/angle control surfaces. (A simple steering wheel was all that was needed) The bow planes can be secured at a set angle and I could rely completely on the stern planes to maintain angle and depth should I chose to do so.
One thing to concider early on, is that these planes surfaces (especially the fairwater planes) provide no lift as the wing of an aircraft does...this is to say the shape is the same above as below these surfaces. Any lift is due to the angle only and not from the "wing" shape itself.
A requirement of this "fly by wire" arrangment was that if all pressures were released from these controls, a method must exist to return all of these controls to a "home" position. This was performed with the use of a spring arrangment.
Only the effort to remove these surfaces from this home position will require any effort.
To keep things simple, Course, depth, and speed will be the primary indicators I will make use of.
"fly by wire" is a term that perhaps I should not use as solid mechanical linkages will be the method used to control these surfaces.
As you have come to realize, there is massive amounts of work ahead of me and tons or research. With a little luck, this boat should be a dream to drive.

I've already built it.

Hi David. I'm sure it will work. Let me know how your mechanism works. I like the idea of an "airplane" type control stick. Frank D.
