Hi Jim. The Trojan brand is preferred by most golf
courses for their golf carts. The batteries I used on my solar system were
Trojan brand and I had them in continuous use for 13 years before replacement.
The thing that seems to be the difference is the plate thickness. The
thicker the plates, the more abuse they can take. Charging and discharging
cycles increase with thicker plates, making the life span longer.
A 6 volt battery can have a lot more power "pulled"
from it without overheating because each cell is larger. An individual
cell is about 2 volts, regardless of brand. The 6 volt batteries are basically
the same size as a 12 volt battery, but each cell on the 6 volt types is
larger. The "traction" type batteries are used in lots of applications like
golf carts, floor machines, forklifts, and plug-in electric cars. The Trojan
brand is what I find most commonly called out as original equipment in
these machines. That may be just because they have a big sales force or
something......don't know.
I would guess that any respected battery manufacturer that
builds that type of battery has a comparable product. Interstate is as
good as Exide and probably Trojan too. I need to pick a battery size that
can be lifted up through the hatch, so it can't be too large. I'm
thinking the 72 pound ones are as large as I can go with. Frank
