Are you working on ROVs or AUVs? There's some information out there on
building ROVs, almost nothing on AUVs, although much of the technology is
identical.

You can check out http://www.rov.net. In there, the author describes some
of that stuff, and there's a fairly lengthy chat forum archived that talks
about shaft seals, among other things.

Depending on how big your shafts are, and how deep you want to go, you can
check out SubTech, which is a company that supplies stuffing boxes for RC
subs that are using either a 3/16" or 1/8" shafts. They are located at
