I just got the book "CSS H. L. Hunley."   It has the entire history of
the boat,
and it includes a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff I never imagined.

A note in here is that an "Electro-Magnet motor" was considered for the
boat.   They went so far as to try to build the motor, without success.

The boat was made of 1/4-inch iron.   It survived undamaged a 56-foot
dive into the mud at the bottom.   Normally, six or eight feet was as
deep
as it got.

Fortunately, building at home isn't this hairy.
