Re: Robot-Fish Psubs (was Re: Screw size and speed)



Hi Axle,
Thanks for the info.  I took a quick look to see if anything new and
exciting was there (and there is some).  I agree with the general consensus
though, that swimming propulsion is not likely to replace propellors very
soon, if at all.  I just like to explore new ideas.  My own school of
thought is to try placing two wings on the ends of two long pivoting beams
such that they sweep a short arc.  The wings would pivot around the end of
the beams as they went back and forth in the arc.  The horizontal forces
would cancel along with the tendency to move the hull sideways leaving a
pure forward propulsion with each stroke.  This would lend itself well to
human power as the legs also work in short reciprocating strokes.  To turn
one would only have to change the allowable pivot on the two wings (bias
each towards the side of desired thrust).
