Q:
How do I start a new topic and send it to the mailing list?
-
Start by composing an email as you normally would and send it to
personal_submersibles@psubs.org with an appropriate subject line.
Your email will automatically be forwarded to everyone else on the
mailing list, including yourself. Please note that messages
will only be accepted by our server from the email account that
you used when you first subscribed to the mailing list.
If you have multiple email accounts, make sure you use the correct
one or your message will not be accepted.
Q:
How do I respond to an existing topic?
-
Simply hit the "Reply" button provided by the software you use to
read your email.
Q:
I was receiving messages from the mailing list, but all of a sudden
they stopped being delivered. What happened?
-
The discussion group does "go quiet" every once in a while and it's
possible that nobody has written anything. Check the
archives
to see if there are any current ongoing discussions. If you find a
relatively new archive that was never delivered to you, read the following
paragraph and then try
resubscribing
to the mailing list.
-
Your email address might have been deleted from the mailing list due
to delivery errors at your mail server. Perhaps your mail server
was down when our server attempted to deliver a message to your user
account, perhaps your user account is out of disk space and is no
longer accepting email messages, or maybe you didn't pay last months
invoice and your ISP has shut your account off. Whatever the reason,
if a delivery error is returned by your mail server more than once
within a reasonable period of time we simply delete your email address
from our database to prevent the errors from continuing.
But don't take it personally. When you have the problem
resolved with your ISP and/or mail server, you can
resubscribe
to the PSUBS mailing list.
Q:
I receive email messages of discussions that other group members are having,
but when I try to send a response or start a new topic, it doesn't get delivered
to the group.
-
The mailing list software is configured to only allow messages from the same
email address that you provided when you subscribed to the discussion group.
Make sure that the address you are using to send your messages is the
same email address that you provided when you subscribed to the discussion group.
If you want to submit messages from multiple email addresses you'll need to
register each one with the mail list server through the subscription process.
-
The mailing list software is configured to reject any reply or topic containing
more than 40,000 characters. Most binary files (.gif .jpg) easily exceed the
40,000 character limit and will not be delivered to mailing list members.
Make sure that your reply or topic contains less than 40,000 characters and
do not include inline images or file attachments. If you have a photo or
document that you want to contribute to the group, send it to the
WebMaster for inclusion on the PSUBS
web site.
Q:
My ISP had temporary problems that prevented delivery of email to my account.
Why was my email address removed from the discussion group database?
-
Because your mail server returns an error message to the PSUBS server
notifying us of a delivery problem for each message that is sent to the
mailing list by other members. If 100 members contribute a message
during the day, we receive 100 email messages from your mail server
telling us that there was a problem delivering mail to you. Those
messages unnecessarily absorb resources such as disk space and Internet
bandwidth. When you resolve the delivery problems with your user
account, simply
resubscribe
to the mailing list and your email address is reactivated on the PSUBS
mailing list.
Q:
How do I know if I should subscribe to the mailing list again or not?
-
When in doubt,
resubscribe.
If you are already subscribed to the mailing list you will receive a
response from the mailing list software stating that you are already
a member of this group.
