All oils used on the water should be environmentally friendly.  I use vegetable oil in my launch cart.

Alan, I
looked into air, but it presents some problems. One is
compensating it otherwise you will get less preformance
based on depth. Two is they are not as stiff and have give
as well as less fine control. Also another problem is if you
used compressed air, you have a limiting factor or you could
use a compressor, but have to have a bank to draw
from.The main draw back of hydraulic for me was
the mess and polution factor. Otherwise, hydraulic seems to
be the way to go.I am hoping to come up with a
manipulator design that can be used on most psubs that is

just use air if the pneumatic cylinders are rated for 150
psi.If they
are rated for 150 psi it would be assumed that their
mechanical strengthwould
match the load they can lift with 150 psi
also.Is there
any advantage other than the o ring working both ways to
stop wateringress,
as you have said previously. Does anyone else use them in
placeof

No problems, Gamma has air
cylinders and at 1,000 feet the hydraulic pump is set at
1,100 psi.  Your K sub can have a pressure setting of 500
or less and work just fine. Remember, your not lifting a lot
just the arm plus a bit.
