I have tried a few oils in my experiments building thrusters. I have gone to silicone as I believe Emile & maybe Carsten have. With the various oils, in a short time some of the insulation on my wires degraded. Also I'm suspicious that the glue positioning my hall sensor board went soft in the oil & let the hall sensor move. Greg also noticed some deterioration of plastic in his oil filled thruster. I did experiments soaking various plastics in WD40 etc & were getting a break down of some of the plastics in a short time. You might get away with it depending on the use of or type of plastic in the motor. Brian better cross his fingers as several gallons of silicone would be pretty expensive. I just stick the shop vac hose over the valve (which is slightly smaller diameter than the hose) and that'll pull a small vacuum in the cabin. If you can see a cabin pressure gauge through a viewport, just pull the vacuum and then see if it persists over say ten minutes after removing the shop vac. If it does, your hull is air-tight. Can Triton check it out for you? I have met them here in Auckland & at Vero beach & they seem to be very good & helpful people. Other alternatives may be to contact ABS & see if one of their inspectors will look over it. You would have to stipulate as to how detailed you would want them to look at it. Scott Waters & Vance Bradley have been working with ABS on the Pisces project, they may be able to help you with contacts. Vance may be an option! Carsten in Germany would be great. Maybe he wants to visit Disney Land. He is an inspector for Swiss Lloyds part time. If you were looking at Paul Moorehouse then Carsten is not that much further away! I use a lot of these power supplies at work: http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/207475 ...and they're great performers, with wide AC and DC input voltage ranges, but expensive at $800 a pop. Point being, you may be able to find something similar that has less current capacity and hence less expensive. At the top of them most have a cross cut in them to weaken them at that point so if they blow they blow in a controlled direction. They would be particularly weak at that point with regard to crushing. I am not sure how the capacitor would operate once it was crushed; whether it wouldn't work at all, or partially work, & whether that would result in the circuits failure or just reduce the life of the circuit. I read about this on the Psub list & other web sites years ago, so they must have a history of failing under pressure. In order to reach some 5 knots, I would add a bow and stern fairing on the waterline (Drebbel style?) Increases the waterline length and give better directional stability. Euronaut and Drebbel run much metter on the surface when some 2-3 deg. stern heavy Otherwise it will go nose down and dive under high power? Both direct drive or generator/ thruster are a good option. If I build the generator version, I would buy a 24-48 VDC genset . If not available build it from a 5-8 Kw Diesel engine with 1 or 2 big (100-200 Amp) 24VDC truck dynamo?s. Pod motor of some 4-5 Kw. I have a steerable rimdrive astern; turns good with only a 35 deg. The other down side isthe thread may possibly jam in the nut if any muck got caught in there. It may be a useful idea for some other function. If it supports white balancing using a reference, one trick I have seen done is to hold a white tablet in the manipulator jaws with the arm extended, and then zoom in on that through the viewport / dome to perform a camera white balance and better restore true colour on video. As far as lighting goes, one possible thing you could do to improve apparent clarity is to physically move your light sources outboard, so that they aim towards centre front at an angle, instead of being right in line with your viewing direction. This tends to minimize backscatter from suspended particles in the water. Somewhere in the build log you should see how he has done his rotating thrusters. http://www.guernseysubmarine.com/index.htm I understand where you are coming from in that a welded rod on to the thruster's penetrator would be more substantial than a threaded rod that may unwind. As the guys have said, watch that the magnets don't get too hot. Also most magnets are glued on so any heat may effect the glue. All the best.
