Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Pressure
compensation
Bill
I was down at MBARI (Monterey Bay Aquarium
Research Institue) a few months back. Got a chance to get a close look at
their ROV's Ventana and Tiburon. The Tiburon is rated to 13000 feet and the
Ventana is rated to I believe about 5000 feet. On the Tiburon, every system is
encased in oil except the cameras. The have no pressure problems because of
this. I don't see why a motor controller couldn't be submerged in mineral oil.
A simple o-ring seal around the potentiometer shaft sticking out of the
housing should keep the oil in and the water out. There are PC's that are
running completely submerged in mineral oil. http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/article.asp?CIID=26054
