I could be wrong, but I thought UCs are mainly used to provide a fleeting
but powerful burst to handle hills and acceleration. In land vehicles, it
means the power supply only needs to be able to continouly deliver enough to
offset road friction, heat loss and air resistance at the speed limit.
Too bad we don't build with just 'passing speed' in mind.

I guess it allows an all-mechanical system vs 2 parallel systems in an
electric hybrid. Though give me the air-regenerative brakes anytime - way

This is a very efficient small diesel generator that keeps batteries charged
for a bus. The generator is the size of a small car engine. The battery pack
presumably fills much space.
The inverted motor on the tire rim would be interesting to use in a sub.
Keeping batteries charged to within 10% of peak, or at least not going below
50% dramatically increases their lifepan. Bonus: run-silent option with
batteries only. Slashdot said somebody hacked their hybrid car to do that.
