Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] TANK / PSI QUESTION

Sean,

Very well put, in both your last postings. For examples, one can look at anything from building design to machine design. We still use the same basic materials for construction (with some exceptions) but engineering has been constantly refining things into more and more tighter designs. Smaller, lighter and more efficient.

An amateur welders motto: If you not sure about your "first pass, lay on a few more." Not necessarily a good idea ,but it feels comforting.

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say that a gut feeling can replace engineering calculations. Certainly, as problems get more complicated (with more variables, complicated geometries, materials, etc.) they tend to become less intuitive, and in any case, prudence demands proper diligence with respect to design effort; however, "that looks about right" often is, and will serve as a good check against calculation errors.

Well now.....if I read you correctly Sean this quote:

/"In engineering design, for example, we design a part to withstand V amount of force, plus or minus W, X % of the time, with Y probability of failure after Z hours in service - there are no absolutes." /

Is the _formula_ for...."*That looks about right"! *

and explains this:

/"Hobbyist projects are often impressive simply because they incorporate engineering overkill that you just don't see in commercial projects."/

I have never seen it explained quite so clearly, and it would seem that, that is the common ground we share (amateurs) with you professionals.

Thanks Sean!
