[PSUBS-MAILIST] radar

Just wondering how one would go about implementing a surface radar? Obviously
this would be for a larger, untended sub like Carsten's project, or anything
similar for which surface running is a design consideration. Would it be
possible to modify one of the standard consumer radar units (Furuno, Ratheon,
etc.) by replacing or augmenting the supplied radome housing with something
depth capable? I don't know much about these scanners, but if the guts are
separable from the outer shell, this seems plausible - provided the depth
capable housing was made of something transparent to the radar. Alternatively,
what about some mechanical configuration to keep the scanner in a 1 atm space
when submerged, but deployable on the surface? In either case, it is desireable
to get such a scanner as high as possible when surfaced, but then have some
means of reducing the profile of the masts / superstructure when running
submerged. Come to think of it, a folding mast that incorporated radar, radar
reflector, nav lights, VHF and so forth might not be a bad idea. Any thoughts?
