[PSUBS-MAILIST] concept sketch

As a result of Carsten's suggestion I updated the design by adding a fourth hull underneath the two main pressure hulls. Originally, I did this in an attempt to increase the vessels's draught enough to permit the egress of divers from the lockout chamber exit hatch without changing the hatch position. I don't think I accomplished this successfully, since the space beneath the hatch is still insufficient for a person to stand when the boat is on the bottom; however, the design change added a couple of benefits that have nothing to do with lockout operation.

Since the propulsion is diesel-electric, the engine need not be located in proximity to the prop shaft(s), and in fact it is desireable to put it in a lower position, since it is a heavy piece of gear and will help to lower CG. By putting the engine / generator down below, I get this benefit, plus the added benefit of lower noise levels in the main pressure hulls above. The increased draught allows me to extend the mast well deeper, increasing my maximum "periscope" depth, and allows me to drain the bilges into the lower space for overboard pumping, reducing the free surface effect of any water in the bottom of the main pressure hulls.

I added the bow doors to this drawing, which are rotated into the closed position for cruising or surface runnng, to improve the hull lines and protect these viewports. I also added props, for no reason other than to make it look cool.
