Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Viewport design question

Plus round windows are less likely to push through. It's the same theory behind manhole covers, no matter which way you turn them they won't fall down the hole.

Although I wonder if you couldn't slope the window so that the outside surface had 50% more area than the inside surface and the width of the windo would be at a slope.... uh kind of like the attached gif shows. this way the stress would be distributed over a wider area, although the corners would still chip after a while.

But if you want rectangular windows for asthetic purposes, could you not put some kind of plating to block off the bottom, top and sides so it looks rectangular?

Rob,
Those windows are not pressure resistant. They are for underway on the surface in inclement weather. The space behind them are free-flooding.

Then, while researching further I came across these:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1615000/images/_1617932_windows_300.jpg

These images are of right angled windows embedded in
the conning tower of a Russian Antey-class [NATO name
'Oscar II'] nuclear submarine, which has been claimed
to be capable of diving to 600 metres (about 2000
feet).

Thoughts?
