Hi All,
This is to announce the 2006 PSUBS Convention to be
held at Seven Points park in Raystown Lake, PA, from
June 23-to-25. The agenda features some traditions
from past years, such as an initial get-together
cookout and speaker presentations. However, there are
also some fundamentally different aspects this time
around. It will be a camping weekend at a scenic lake,
and a number of participants will attend with their
submarines. The agenda will feature presentations only
in the evening, so that we can enjoy outdoor
activities. Those with subs can go dive in them. Other
participants can assist in sub operations, go boating,
skiing, SCUBA diving, fishing, hiking, or swim from a
sandy beach. We're not going to make any attempt to
centrally plan either the sub dives or all the other
recreational activities, they are best left to
individuals.
Schedule:
- Friday June 23rd: Participants arrive throughout the
day. In the evening we have reserved the Oak Pavilion
for a cookout.

- Saturday: Free day for outdoor activities until
evening. Presentations begin in the evening, around 5
pm. The local Visitors Bureau has promised us a free
meeting room. The presentation agenda will include an
economical dinner, although the exact nature of the
meal will depend on the location the bureau comes up
with.
- Sunday: 10 AM to 12 AM lineup of submarines,
tentatively at the visitor center parking lot.
Basically it's a static display to see subs that might
have spent much of the prior two days in the water.
Subs:
The following submarine owners have expressed their
intention to attend with their subs, although some
could face last minute conflicts:
- Greg Cottrell
- Mark Ragan
- Alec Smyth
- John Maynard
- Dan Lance
- Dan Hryhorcoff
- Alan Winick
- Pierre Poulin
Activities:
Below is a link to a private marina inside the park
and only yards from the park's launch ramp. There is a
good aerial photo of the lake on their website. They
offer all kinds of boat rentals. There are also many
competing services just outside the park.

The park itself offers a beach, hiking trails, and
easy access to the water.

Getting There:
The closest airport with commercial flights is
Altoona, PA, about 30 minutes away. Second closest
airport is State College, PA. Raystown Lake is about a
3 hour drive from either Washington DC or Pittsburgh.
If you're looking it up on Mapquest, the closest town
is Hesston, PA.
Lodging:
We have reserved a group camping area that can
accomodate either tents or RVs. There is a limit of 30
"sleeping units", and within those, not more than 16
may be wheeled. For this reason we need to track what
people are planning to camp in. If we're set to exceed
either limit, there are still many campsites in the
park but you would need to reserve them on your own.
We will post an alert on PSUBS if nearing capacity of
our group site, but please be aware, this is first
come first served. If you prefer not to camp, there
are numerous alternatives available. A good place to
start is www.raystown.org, our friends at the visitors
bureau.
Reservations:
We will be putting up a reservations form on the
website shortly. The cost is $20 per tent or RV for
camping, and $25 per head for food. This includes the
fee for two nights in the group camp, and two evening
meals. All other fees such as boat ramp fees, boat
rentals, etc. are up to each individual.
Details on how to register and pay for your stay are
forthcoming..
Other Logistical Arrangements:
I'd encourage people to coordinate sharing tents,
rental cars, boat rentals, etc. in order to reduce
their costs. It would also be useful to the sub owners
to know whether anyone can attend with a boat for
surface support purposes, and whether someone might
bring along their SCUBA gear to act as safety divers.
Regards,
Ray
