Dear Psubbers:
I've received a TON of private emails from Psub members regarding
status of sunken ferry survey - so I'll try to cover the basics, to date,
in one response:

The 350 foot+ vessel 'Queen of the North' hit a steep, rocky shoreline and
sank last wednesday, on a scheduled run from Northern Vancouver Island to
Prince Rupert, near the southern tip of the. Water depth is about 1300
feet. All passengers amd crew got off with the exception of one couple, who
are missing and presumed drowned. Nuytco Research Ltd., was contracted by
the owners, B.C. Ferries Ltd., to locate and survey the wreckage and carry
out a high-def video survey of the vessel or the various pieces of the
vessel. It is likely that the vessel will be in several pieces, based on
information from the survivors and from commercial fishermen in the area,
who relay that their sounders indicate that there are several large 'rocks'
on the bottom - that "weren't there last week!".
Our crews are operating two Newtsubs of the 'DeepWorker 2000'
series - rated for 2000 feet operations. They are equipped with dual 600
watt HMI lights, hi-def video cameras with on-board drive storage for about
50 hours of uncompressed video, Imagenex dual ultra hi-rez sonar, acoustic
tracking and navigation with surface electronic grid , and long-range
digital comms.Subs also carry full-function 'newtarm' manipulators,
hydraulic cutters, etc.  Battery capacity is 6-8 hours per dive, depending
on manip usage. They are working from a 100+ self-propelled barge with two
10 ton cranes onboard.
Subs and crew are currently en route to the site and will arrive
this evening and begin diving operations in the morning.
For more info on sinking, etc., I suggest you google 'Queen of the North'
sinking', 'mini-subs to survey sunken . .' B.C. Ferry sinks' etc., Also
check out www.nuytco.com for specs on the subs ( this site has been
revamped, for those who haven't visited it in a while)
Regards
Phil Nuytten
