Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Unusual sub on Flickr

Why not just use rubbing alchohol or the like?

Of course you could use an inner tube, old technology but the valves are brass (on most) and this would solve the corrosion but I didn?t know the proposed operating temperature. Of course if you can get hold of this non toxic antifreeze at a good price then why not.

Even strong saline wouldn't lower the frezing point enough and its corrosive effects on the wheel and valve stem body would be an issue. Non toxic RV antifreeze is the way to go or better yet, make the tires easily removable.

There speaks a man with experience, but surly a strong saline solution would be just as good and more environmentally friendly.

Aye, I can understand the bouyancy point, but why anti-freeze? That's a pretty toxic thing to use, that stuff is worse than oil.. I forget the exact ratio but one teaspoon of that stuff can contaminate several hundred/(thousand) gallons of water... I know one teaspoon of fuel oil in a dsally on a ship can contaminate the whole thing thus pissing off some poor schmuck who has to flush and clean the thing. (don't ask how I know this)

The wheels stay on in the water - they are filled so they wouldn't upset the center of buoyancy when immersed. (It was an antifreeze/water mix so it wouldn't freeze.)

Why would you fill tires with anti-freeze?
