Hi Alec.
I dont think the owner did the welding and I cant find a recipt in the file but I would bet it was a certifed pipe fitter. The time line is right and when the boat was registered they told him he had the only personal sub in minnesota. But that was before the computer age so who knows. The original owner lived in northern minnesota on the Iron Range with plenty of welding experience local so he wouldnt have travelled to far for the welding shop. The plans where purchased from G.W. Kittredge in 1977 according to the letter sent by the captain. on the upgrades? The props are crumbling, I do need new ones, plus the wires that are cracked need replacing and some fittings rusted on the antenna. with me being a milwright on the Iron Range I need to do it as right as possible. on the big show, I would love to come but not this year maybe the next one.
Gotta go make hay now. Thanks for your time. Rob

Hi Rob,

I bought a K-250 that was very nicely built by Dale Heinzig, and have
spent two years now making small enhancements. I'd really, really
recommend you take a look at a couple of similar boats before deciding
how to fix or upgrade things, because when you look at different K-250s
on the inside, they hardly seem like the same design. I know if I were
in your shoes, I'd profit enormously just from talking to a couple of
people who operate them. Is there ANY chance you can make it to PA for
the convention on the 23rd?

BTW I have an old article from Practical Welder magazine about a guy who
built his K-250 in Minnesota in the eighties. The name was Ben
McGiffert, and his boat looks like a beauty in the photos. It's a long
shot, but that wouldn't be the same one, would it? If it is, I'd be
happy to send you a copy.

Thanks,

Alec

Hi,
I bought the plans, air tank, k-250 submarine, crank off trailer,
controls,
cb radio, etc.
A scuba instuctor in our area had it built in the eighties, it
last
sailed in 90's in Lake Superior and our local lake Lake Pokagama. Do to
his
retirement a divorce came soon after and he sold his life long dream to
me
for a pittence. To make matters worse, after I counted out half the
money ,
he said "give the other half to the Xwife".
On the plus side the man is a perfectionist and it shows in the sub.
the
dome, front port, and controls where put away in the house, the sub sat
out
side but was farely protected. Its in real nice shape, no scratches on
the
port or bubble, and clean everywhere else.
neg side, the plastic props are shot(I dont know what to buy to
replace),
the wiring in the sub needs to be replaced, copper air line pulled from
swedge loc( I dont trust the rest now), antenna mount rusted. And I need

three batteries that will accept the h2 caps.
So far just minimal stuff, but a couple of other projects prevent me
from
starting on k-250 yet. Winter comes on fast some years around here so it
may
have to wait till next year.
       thanks for your time, Rob

You bought a K-250? Do tell us more, please. Or do you mean you bought

the K-250 plans?

Thanks,

Alec

I have returned, certificate in hand!
I am still processing the pictures and videos I took and trying to
figure out how to best display them.
The experience was priceless and I came away from it with a good
degree of
comfort in my abilities
to operate the K-250, even if only on a beginner's level (hey, I'm
new). I
have definately satisfied my
'learn to drive before you go designing' criteria at least.

I have heard rumor that there are other people offering lessons in ME

and NH (USA).
Does anyone have any information on these claims?

-patrick, newly qualified operator of the K-250 submarine

Rob,
Check out Piranha Props. They have composite blades and hubs of various sizes. I used three of their blades on an Etek outboard conversion. Pics on my website:

Scroll through the updated pages for the Etek.
