I agree about not having a drainpipe submersible. PVC is a good option for
most beginners, but you want the PVC that's made for extended pressure.
Another thing that I kind of thought up of (and tested) is removing the fan
from a large refrigerator (the restaurant kind). I actually did that, and
then built a plastic "pod" around it to keep it airtight. Basically,
everything except the propeller is inside of the pod. The propeller shaft
has washers on both sides. I don't know the end result for deep and long
dives, but what I can say is that this engine produced a lot of power. It is
very much electric, so I advise you take extreme caution when using it.
On a related story, anyone have some helpful insight on the wired world of
ROV's? I need a more efficient wired system for surface to sub control.

as you cant cheaply buy an rov, much of my own project follows the idea to
have 70-80% constructed from parts available in a hardware store or similar.
but i dont want a drainpipe sub!
my hull is an 8"sewer pipe tho. i want functional and looking good
