Hi pusbbers,
Just got back from San Francisco where I was able to get into the conning tower
of the USS Pampanito ! Thanks to one of the very nice docents there at the
sub. (if anyone was to ask I was insturcted to say he's my
uncle) I guess he could tell how badly I wanted to go in there. I was
talking to him top side and he motioned for me to slip under the ropes and we
went through above conning tower down to the attack and navigation room in the
conning tower. Not a lot of room in there! He also opened up the
area so I could see the main induction valve, a big mushroom looking thing that
is operated in the galley, it was a very massive "valve" that was probably
3 feet in diameter, the seat around the edge was surprisingly crude. Also
I noticed on all the hatches that the seat for the rubber gasket was
brass. Does anybody know how that brass ring transitions to the steel
structure of the rest of the hatch ring?
