Do some review of the primary power systems on US and other Diesel Subs
 
I believe that a Freq Drive would be more efficant than using a mechanical Versa/Drive speed control, in the industerial application I cant count the number of Versa/Drives I have replaced with Freq Drives.
Newer Freq Drives give exelant torque at low rpm
 
your primary problem is dicision making AC gen sets are every where
Rectifires create alot of heat ect...
 
If you think a DC gen set is the way to go look to the welding ind Miller makes some nice Diesel DC welders
