RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Launch Retrieval Transport

Note:  Sent this last night but it appears to have not gone through or was restricted to size.  After multiple attempts on Joe’s and my part to get this loaded, now breaking it into 4 parts.

Part 3 of 4

9.     Dry dock trailer

a)      Pros:

i)        Lowers draft of submersible at launch

ii)      Should negate ramp issues in S. Florida

b)      Cons:

i)        Still have to get to the channel and dive site

10. Hydrodynamic shaped sub hull

a)      Pros:

i)        Eases towing

ii)      Should negate sub’s tendency to oscillate back and forth under tow behind the tender

iii)    Opportunity to increase size and reshape MBTs to reduce launching draft

b)      Cons:

i)        Does not address issues of ramp launching and recovery

ii)      Requires a tender

11. Surface tender

a)      Towing

i)        Pros:

(1)    Available to support the submersible in an emergency

(2)   Can carry additional supplies to support multiple dives

(3)   Can carry additional passengers to swap out on the surface

(4)   Available for use in other applications

ii)      Cons:

(1)    Towing is slow and monotonous

(2)   Sub can put an undue strain on submersible

(3)   Tow line can part and submersible loss

(4)   Doesn’t address ramp launching/recovery issues

b)      Mother ship (Kittredge’s 40 ft. tender with stern ramp, a vessel with a knuckle crane, or s ship with an A-frame)

i)        Pros:

(1)    Increased support availability

(2)   Increased range

(3)   Faster time to dive site

(4)   Increased linger time at dive site

(5)   Available for use in other applications

ii)      Cons:

(1)    Requires a larger vessel significantly increasing costs.

(2)   Doesn’t address ramp launching/recovery issues

(3)   Increased draft limits shore access

(4)   Doesn’t address ramp launching/recovery issues.

(5)   Increased maintenance requirements
