Thanks!  That's a pretty neat piece of history.  Doesn't look to be to functional and the first initial read leads me to believe it was a maintenance nightmare.  Looks like it is more a bottom crawler then able to operate mid-water.  My great-great uncle Simon Lake's first subs had the same problem and thus the wheels; he either motored on the surface or crawled on the bottom.
