Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Launch Retrieval Transport

Thanks. I tried to beat them out of Star II, but they wouldn't budge. Damnit. I love those little General Dynamics tadpoles. Vance

Vance,
You are actually correct after reviewing Will Forman’s The History of American Deep Submersible Operations.  Forman, Tap Pryor, and Bill Walker built the first LRT as part of Makai Range (later Makai Ocean Engineering) and made many demonstrations to the Navy in hopes of a sale.  The Navy went and built their own.  After some financial difficulties, Star II and the LRT was transferred to Maui Divers Deepex where they made 240 dives harvesting pink coral before a diving accident in September 1975 resulted in the death of two divers and the loss of the LRT in deep water.

A new LRT was built and coral harvesting operations continued.  In January 1979, Star II was transferred by General Dynamics to the University of Hawaii.  Maui Divers continued using the LRT and Star II up to dive number 859.  Star II continued scientific ops (after a rebuild and renaming) with the LRT until the sub was retired in 1987, last dive was 1271.  The LRT was later mated with the Pisces submersible for further scientific ops.  The second LRT was more substantial as it was towed with the sub to Johnson Island.

Thanks for making me go refresh my memory!

Is that right? Hmm. I'm pretty sure it was the other way around, but wasn't there, so won't swear to it. The Makai'i Range (or somebody) built a 35 footer and ran Star II off it for deepwater coral harvest. I thought the whole kit and kaboodle belonged to the University of Hawaii, somewhere in there, but it's hard to keep up with those folks over there past the left coast. One of the Nektons used it, too, and some testing was done with some of the first acrylic hulled test beds, and I think Phil N. used it off and on with some of his projects. When Pisces IV and V got into the picture at the U of H, a bigger LARP was built to handle the 12 ton load until they got a ship big enough to handle an A-frame. Maybe they still use it, but I don't know. Wasn't it the smaller LRT being used when a diver died? Those things are still available commercially by some of the same people--they specialize in all sorts of aluminum work, including that. Don't ! know them, but I've seen their web page, with a Pisces on the LARP.

The LRT was originally designed for another purpose/vehicle and was given by the Navy to Hawaii

Rick,
We are limited to 8.5' legal trailer width, so raising the cg significantly increases the risk of upset in moderate seas.
Take a look at the L to W ratio of the LRT in this photo.
