The For Dummies books are quite good but if you have a Quality CAD programme
(Rhino, Solidworks, AutoDESK Mechanical Desktop AutoDESK Inventor) it should
have easy to follow Tutorials that come with it. 

I personally mastered 2D CAD first which I believe made the jump to 3D much
easer.

Very well said, my good friend.
However, there are some of us [me] who are amazingly talented at Photoshop,
etc, but lack many skills on CAD programs. But I must say - you are
correct... being able to view a lifelike digital model of your product is
amazing.

Not having much patience [I'm Italian, ha. Ha.] I've designed a template for
my sub's angles on just plain paper, then traced it time and time again to
form different sides, etc, and that works... to a limit.

Once I have the time and patience to, I wish to learn a CAD program. I got
one free through a promotion, but all three CD's are still in my drawer. 

Does anyone have any good tutorial books or websites where you can get the
basics on CAD for a reasonable price, etc?

......there's no faster way to jot down an idea than precisely as you say.

But, the first time you manipulate a 3d model of your creations, zoom in / 
out, change colors, calculate odd shaped volumes with a click, and put 
yourself in the pilots seat to look out the port.

........well it might as well be heroin,... your hooked!
