Steve. Thru-hull shaft seals are exactly what they say they
are......Thru-hull holes that need a seal.
For my money ( remember, you asked ! ) I'll be using electric motors with
all thru-hull connections hard piped ( for air and water ) or epoxy sealed for
electrical connections.
This puts the propulsion system outside and is a
separate/replaceable/upgradeable component. When there are more than
one.....your odd's of total failure is divided by how many motors you
have.
The next step is completely sealed motors with magnetic couplers
between the motor and the propeller.
No Leaks Allowed!!!
