Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Re: PS-2
Dan,
Just to add a little to that, both the PC-8s had 8 port conning towers. Perry reduced that to 24" OD with 6 ports, and made the hulls that came afterwards 9/16" thick (PC-14-01 &02). Both PC-14s were designed for 1200 foot service. 14-01 was certified by ABS from the beginning, 14-03,however, built for the Army for the missle target range at Kwajelien, was tested for 600 feet service and never certified (I guess the military figured they didn't need no stinking ABS--self-insured, don't you know). Both hulls, however, are the same.
These four boats all share the same 42" diameter, although the length varies here and there. And by the way, all four of them are still operational, 2 active and 2 inactive, but in service, either way. PC-8 was the very first boat built with Stachiw's bubble window, way back in 1969. Amazing, eh?
And yes, before you ask, I DID have a lot of fun in that little thing. Dove it from Bergen, Norway to the Oman, and a lot of points in between, and it never let me down. And the happy news is that she is still doing it, in Bulgaria now, and the guys who have it are as crazy about PC-8 as I was. I made about 400 dives in the sub, including the ABS recert deep dives in Norway.
