Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] NEWS ARTICLE: For sub hobbyists, smugglers' craft is subpar

This is quite an interesting thread, even if a little off-topic from psubs, education and
the motivations behind it do impact our sub hobbies in some ways.

I'm another software engineer with a computer science degree. My education was
solely about learning to learn, I already knew most of the material from messing
around with computers and electronics as a child, the real value was learning how
to research, present findings, analisys of results, etc. which are applicable to
any field (let's face it, 95% of what is taught in undergraduate CS degrees is
practically out of date by time you graduate - well, it was probably out of date
before you started the degree).

The learning how to learn part was key to when I got interested in designing and
building subs, being able to digest the wealth of information already avaliable and
make sense of it all.

Of course, life teaches you how to learn as well, so there is no peice of paper
required for anything (other than artifical barriers placed by bureaucrats).

I'm toying with the idea of going back to college at some point and maybe getting
my Masters in Naval Architecture and/or Marine Engineering, this time the motivation
would be to learn the material, rather than learning how to learn.

Cheers,
  Ian.
