I'm sure you can get it done closer to home then in the States. Maybe it's
the approach your using with the places your going.
First off, if your an individual and not from a company fabricators are
skeptical. Most times when a fabricator gets a request from an individual
person, it's for something that never gets built. Either the individual
gets shell shocked when they get the price or they have so mush time on
their hands and they request prices from so many places that all but one
fabricator out of the fifteen are wasting their time.
You have to sound confident and convincing. Also get the terms right when
your talking the talk.
Second, what you need are parts. Your not shopping for SUBMARINE parts
unless you just happen to hit on a small enough shop with an owner that
might take an interest in your project. Bigger firms don't get excited
about the end result of what they will be making and they don't want to
waste time with pipe dreamers making rocket ships and submarines. Also
every shop is watching their liability in things they make. If you need a
piece of XYZ plate material rolled into a tube of 2 meters long and 1 meter
in diameter, just ask for a quote on that. Disclosure just opens them up to
more liability. Here in the states, it's a big deal.
Know what you want. Ask for only what you want. Keep is simple.
Now if your looking to have the whole hull manufactured for you, you have
to disclose far more and need to have a sit down to talk over the details
and let them know your serious.
Be confident and let them know your going to do the project, with or without
them.
I've been on both sides of your situation.

Hi All.
I'm really struggling to get my K350 project going. Its proving difficult
to get the basic components made up here in the UK. I have contacted
several companies, all of which say they can help, but so far none of them
have actually givin me a final quote so i can tell them to get on with it.
I know it sounds ridiculous. I keep ringing them and asking for updates
but just keep getting excuses.
Its really frustrating as i have a workshop and all equipment organised
and ready to go. Im just killing time making up a wheeled cradle at the
moment.
So, while im "waiting" for these people to get around to giving me a
quote, i thought i'd see if i can get a price from the States or somewhere
in Europe and see about getting it all shipped over. The Dollar/Sterling
exchange rate is really good at the moment and it may prove to be about
the same cost in the end.
So the question is, does anyone know of a reputable company in the USA or
mainland EU that could provide the parts? Perhaps somewhere that has done
it before?
