Of course you can, that's why you carry a flashlight. You carry the
flashlight in your left hand, your handgun in your right, bracing your
right wrist overtop of your left.
You flash the light at the noise or shadow or whatever, and using your
"command" voice, you yell (very loudly) "STOP -- DROP YOUR ---" whatever
they're carrying, gun or knife or whatever. If you haven't identified what
they're carrying, you don't shoot them. Simple. If they don't drop their
weapon, you shoot them. Also simple.
Most people who are doing a home invasion are going to be very surprised at
this point. Their eyes have adjusted to darkness, and you just shone a very
bright light at them, so they're not seeing much. Even if they have a gun
and they shoot in your direction, they'll probably miss.
The point is, having a gun puts you in control, not the other person. You
say in NZ that criminals don't use guns. That's nice, but they may use
knives, or baseball bats. Getting your skull bashed in from a baseball bat
makes you just as dead as getting shot.
If I have a gun (and of course I have the training to use it defensively),
I can (to a certain extent) control any situation that comes up. I may lose
control of the situation, I may even die, but at least I've got a chance, a
much better chance, of coming out alive and keeping my family safe and
unharmed.
And in the bottom line, that is what counts. Protecting your life and the
life of your family. I may not need my gun, and I don't have to use it, but
at least I have the option if the bad guy is armed with a weapon and won't
put it down when I ask.

Jon
