Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Re: GUNS and stuff

In an off-post e-mail Captain Nemo wrote:

>>"Even in our free society, there is no "total freedom", for all
>>must sacrifice the personal freedom of acting irresponsibly toward his
>>neighbor."

and I responded (in part)

>Freedom is directional. (and I quote..)

>Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of
righteousness.

>Romans 6:20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from
righteousness.

>Or as the great theologian Bob Dylan once sang, "You gotta serve somebody."
Even if you're self-serving.
>Or as de Tocqueville said, "America is great because America is good. When she
 ceases to be good
>she will cease to be great."

>What appears to some to be "freedom of acting irresponsibly" is really just a
different kind of bondage.

We all make choices, and they tie us down. Each choice to do something is a
choice not to do all the other options.
The choices being made by millions of individuals every day add up to choosing
the sort of world we will have and
to not choosing to have a different kind of world.

O.K. I'm putting the soapbox back in the attic for now.
