Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] UW-DGPS

I too find this topic of significant value.
I have been searching for a cost-effective IMU, GPS, and Dead reckoning
navigation system.

BEI, Systron Donner Inertial Division makes a high accuracy IMU, the BEI
MotionPak. This is a solid-state device for measuring 6 degrees of freedom.
However, I believe the cost in the $10,000 range.
The next option is the DMU-VG made by Crossbow (www.xbow.com). These IMUs are
in the $5,000 range.

Another approach would be to purchase the Century 2000 aircraft Artificial
Horizon Indicator and Heading gyro to feed rates to a computer to integrate &
update position, speed, and direction. These instruments will probably total in
the $10,000 range.

The NavTrek software from Nobeltec provides a good visual track overlaid on to a
marine chart. There is another program which displays bathyometric chart data
in a visual 3D simulation. These two programs accept GPS data via NMEA 0183
standard. If you loose the GPS signal, the program will continue to update your
position based on the last GPS fix.
If you plan to operate your PSUB in open waters, maybe a trip to the surface at
specific intervals will be enough to keep you on course?

Ken Schulze
