Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Re: submarines/psubbers in Scotland/Northen England?

Hi, Ian:
Just for the record, 'Jim' wasn't a single ADS, but a class. There
were a number of models and variations: Types 1/2/3 plus 'JetJim'
(thruster equipped) FRP versions, etc. In all, there were about 20, if
memory serves. They were assembled by UMEL (Underwater Marine & Electronics
Ltd.) in Farnborough/Alverstoke/Hants. The original JIM was designed by
Salim 'Pop' Peress, in the 1920's to dive on the wreck of the Lusitania.
DHB Construction Ltd., owned and operated the Jim suits. DHB was purchased
by Oceaneering International Inc., as was a controlling interest in UMEL. I
initiated the move to ADS within Oceaneering and had corporate
responsibility for the JIM suits, and the later WASP ADS. The WASP ADS,
using the JIM type 3 arms, is still being used quite successfully in the
Gulf of Mexico by Oceaneering.
