[PSUBS-MAILIST] The USS Albacore Sub near the convention

I don't know if anyone is interested, but the USS Albacore sets in dry-dock as a museum in Portsmouth, NH.  Portsmouth is a little over an hour from Manchester, where the convention is being held.

Albacore was an important experimental submarine.  It proved the value of the basic teardrop hull shape that is used in all subs now.

If anyone is interested, their website is: http://www.portsmouthnh.com/visitors/albacore.html

Below are some details that I clipped out of their online material.

Port of Portsmouth Maritime Museum & Albacore Park
Year-round guided tours of U.S. Navy submarine. 600 Market St., Portsmouth. 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. daily in summer; Colombus Day until Memorial Day, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Admission charged. Group rates available. Call to confirm hours. (603) 436-3680

USS Albacore was laid down on March 15, 1952, launched on August 1, 1953 and commissioned on December 5, 1953. She was to serve the next twenty years as a test bed for many new concepts in submarine development, firstmost being her tear-drop hull design. Faster, more maneuverable, and quieter than previous submarine hull shapes, the tear-drop hull is used in nearly all modern submarine design.
