Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Advice for a newbie?

Rick,

I don't use air to pressure compensate my thrusters. Mine have, carbon against ceramic, high pressure pump seals on the shafts that work fine.

I do have a scuba first stage regulator on my scuba tanks inside the sub to supply air to the ballast system. I altered it to put out about 175 lbs but it's working fine.

dan

have you had problems with case failure using scuba regulators, the first stage is 120 psi output and non venting?

Good addition Rick,
I completely forgot about air compensation. I was thinking of passive compensation systems.

3 There are two ways of water proofing a thruster. One method is to fill the thruster with some fluid, usually oil, so there is no room for water to
enter. The other way is to design your motor pod or shaft drive through
hull with a pump shaft type seal. For low pressure there are rubber seals on the market, but to go deeper, it's best to use a carbon and ceramic face type seal. These are used in water pumps to keep water from dribbling out all the time. You just install it backward, so water doesn't dribble in.

Hi - another thought on Dan's offering is to compensate the motor pod with a line running to a scuba tank. The regulator from the tank compensates the pod automatically. The standard seal from the manufacturer doesn't have to be tinkered with using this method. The one thing you will have to do is
drill/tap a hole in the motor casing to run the line(s) and the
through-hull.

There may be more than one item that needs compensating, like fore and aft trim tanks in the case of magical Child. I will be running lines not from a
tank directly but from a manifold.
