I received your snorkel diagram, thank you. You mentioned that this particular design was used on a u-boat. It would appear that there were various designs and I now have found several including this one.

I like the one Madsen used aboard Kraka from a purely aesthetic perspective, paired with the periscope, it just presents a more military silhouette. Needlefish had this one and it looks a bit "yellow submarine" to me

This one you sent me would most likely be safer and more reliable but, see what you think about my line of thought here. I'm more worried about the exhaust than the snorkel because the entry point for the snorkel need only lead into the engine compartment but, not to the engine itself. There would be a manual shut off should the flapper or float fail, and a jerk back on pitch control, pops the tip up again anyway.

I am planning on a 12v centrifugal blower to move the air down the shaft, so the blower itself is most at risk. The snorkel is not the worry anymore, the exhaust, both engine and cooling ventilation is!

So the question of the day for you and the group in general is....

What manner of exhausting the engine produces the minimum back-pressure, risk of water intrusion, and least risk of CO for the crew?

Regarding your snorkel question, I like your idea of a regulator bank as an air supply in case of the snorkel closing up. Never thought of that one.

Hi, Trent - I feel for you. I was certified in Quebec. It was May 1974 and ice was still at the edges of the . . . quarry. Yes, a quarry. Classy, huh. We were wearing wet suits and five-fingered gloves.

Those crabs are Alaskan Kings I assume.

Hawaii's got excellent diving. I was telling my son I'd love to put Magical Child in a container and sent it out there. When it gets built I just may do that.

When you do come down give me a heads up. We'll do latte and compare notes. Maybe Rheal and Steve Morley from the Island can join us. If Phil's in town maybe he'd like to join us.

I've been on about 20 dives in Alaska, but the water is COLD!! I did my dry-suit cert dive in January and the water temp was 35 and the air was -20 (Fahrenheit) Lots of cool stuff to see and in the winter the vis is pretty good, 75+feet. Not as many fish as tropical diving, but lots of things like Octopus, huge anenomies, crabs (I've seen crabs that were 4 feet across!) The problem is that Anchorage has 30 foot tides and is surrounded by huge mud flats, so the good diving is 60 to 100 miles away. I've done most of my 250 dives in Hawaii (called south Alaska by us Alaskans) where I can put on my BC and jump in. In Hawaii I can easily get 70 minutes out of a tank, in Alaska it's 45 minutes. Amazing what adding 45 pounds does to your air consumption!

I love the underwater world and I like building things, so a sub is a perfect fit. I've been planning and dreaming since I was 12 and first read "The Adventures of the Mad Scientists Club". I've built several working models and lost the first one when I was 16 when it dived deeper than my RC gear would reach in Lake Superior.

My work brings me to Vancouver at least once a year, so when the next trip is approaching, I'll see if we can meet.
