Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Ambient / 1ATM Q?

Hi, there . . . all true but I'll only comment on the last question: the bends are due to not allowing dissolved N2 enough time to dissipate on the way up.

An emergency ascent would cause problems under certain conditions:
  • stayed down too long - the N2 gas circulating throughout your body expands in size (Boyle's Law) and causes blockages similar to strokes.  Ascent has to be graduated.
  • coming up too fast - same result for the same reason.
  • being overweight - N2 saturates/releases (I forget the actual term) differently in fat tissue than lean.
  • being ill, overhung, depressed, dehydrated . . . all these affect your susceptibility to the bends.  Your hormonal shifts cause changes at the cellular level.

I have a couple of questions.
Would this not place the interior of you sub at the same outside atmospheric pressure?
Will this also place the same pressure on the human body in the sub?
If this is true, in the event if an emergency rise to the surface, wouldn't this cause "the bends"?
